Designing Product Labels for Legal Commodity Rules: Compliance Checklist
Avoid marketplace listing suspensions and legal penalties. Master mandatory packaged commodity declarations: MRP, manufacturing date, importer, and net quantity.
Statutory Mandates Under Legal Metrology Regulations
In most major e-commerce markets (including India's Legal Metrology Act and USA FTC Fair Packaging regulations), selling pre-packaged goods without statutory consumer declarations is a criminal offense punishable by confiscation and platform account deactivation. Every consumer package must bear a conspicuous, indelible declaration label prior to fulfillment handoff.
The 7 Mandatory Packaging Declarations
Your product label must prominently display: (1) Generic Name of Commodity, (2) Net Quantity in standard metric units (g, ml, or pieces), (3) Month and Year of Manufacture / Import, (4) Maximum Retail Price (MRP inclusive of all taxes), (5) Complete Name & Registered Address of Manufacturer/Packer, (6) Country of Origin, and (7) Consumer Care Details (Name, Phone, Email, Address for customer grievances).
Minimum Font Size & Contrast Requirements
Legal standards dictate minimum numeral and character heights based on package surface area (e.g. at least 2mm for small packages, 4mm for medium boxes). Ensure high contrast (black typography on solid white substrate) and avoid glossy reflective foils that obstruct inspection cameras.
